About Seasonal Flu

Flu is an acute infection of the respiratory system caused by several different strains of influenza virus. There are four strains of influenza viruses: A, B, C and D. Types A and B cause epidemics, type D only affects cattle. Type C viruses only cause mild infections and are less common. Each year the WHO determines which strains of flu the vaccine should be formulated to protect against in the northern hemisphere. This is based on their monitoring data.

Flu Symptoms

Symptoms can include; a sudden fever, headache, aches, sore throat and a dry chesty cough. Suffers of flu often have chills, joint & muscle pain and overwhelming tiredness. Most flu sufferers will find themselves bed ridden due to their symptoms.

How do you catch Influenza?

Flu is spread by coughs, sneezes and contact with those who already have the disease. He incubation period is 1 to 4 days. As a result, it’s important to note that you can be spreading flu viruses even if you do not have any symptoms yet. Good hand sanitation is vital to prevent the spread of the influenza virus.

Who should get the Flu Vaccination?

Most people recover from flu in one or two weeks, however those with weakened immunity or other health risks can be affected much more severely. At risk groups are advised to get an annual flu vaccination. For people in these groups, the flu vaccine is vital to protect against serious illness or hospitalisation or fatality.

These at risk groups are:

  • People aged 65 years or over
  • People who are pregnant
  • People who are immunocompromised

For anyone who is not in these at risk groups, getting vaccinated is advised if you:

  • Work with large groups of people i.e. in an office or school.
  • Work in hospitals or are a carer.
  • Anyone who is coming into contact with at risk groups
  • Are travelling during influenza season
  • Are likely to be in heavily crowded places like festivals and sporting events
